IRTAL

First exercise: studying a fresco by Michelangelo in Rome called "The fall and expulsion from Garden of Eden", I've registered my first impression, or better what I've noticed first.

"The first notable thing is the red angel on the right while is punishing Adam, immediately later the infinity of Eden painted with a flash, a bright light, then I've seen the the snake twisted around the Tree of Life and the heavy movement of Adam while he is catching the forbidden fruit"

Later, reading some related articles, I've ordered my impressions in a gerarchic system: the evil anthropomorphized snake and the red angel (ambassador and executor of God's will) are the core of the painting, also in the significance, where humanity is a second carachter, maker of its destiny, pushed and pulled, torn between opposite feelings and doomed for ever. On the background the endless brightness of the Garden of Eden, an unattainable place that only confuses human decisions.

It is like a FIRE: is warm, useful, relaxing, its tongues dance around the core and they call you in. Fire is a temptation, its voluptuous movements enchant everyone but when you're too close, when you try to catch it, you'll burn and the scar will remain for a long time. There's a dualism between the beauty and the advantages of such an incredible element, and the intrinsic distructive power.

Second piece: we have to define our aim and how we're going to do it. IRTAL means Intergenerational Residencial Tower for Advanced Living, and it will be a tower in which students and old professors could live, study and enjoy spare time. There'll be two collocations for the project, one in a natural enviroment, the other in a heavy civilizated place; I've chosen Guilin and Manhattan: the first is one of the best place in China and worldwide, very natural and bucolic, the other is the pulsing heart of West, heavy civilizated and crowded.

Third thing: using a modelling software I've created three surfaces that reminds me of the adjectives. The combinations of these shapes have generated others forms and new prospective, useful for the definiton of new rules. here they are:

4th step: the chosen of two catalysts like objects of my memory that evocate images that I would connect with my IRTAL. For the natural context I'll use a STRAW HAT and for Manhattan a NOSE. Here there're the explanation of their meanings , or better the related ideas in my mind, and the irrational figuration of them applyed direclty in the context: it's a jump from the world of ideas to a real scenery justified by my personal lecture of reality.

Fifth look: both the tower will start from an Initial paradigm and then, growing and gaining complexity, be based on a organitional paradigm that would be integrated with the catalysts and the original idea of FIRE to generate new models.

In the artificial context the garden would e replaced by a bright column that connect all the spaces in a vertical corridor, useful to bring light to the inner locals of the tower.

Sixth line: I've started two 3D models to formalize the bones of the building, the structure and the skin on it. The natural tower would be like a overlap of cylinder of decrasing radius. The exception is a pair of laces rolled around the tower in two helixes that in reality is the spine of the whole building. The civilizated context generate a plain box with another box underground (An Ugly version of the part above following the rules Thegoodthebadandtheugly) and absorb the exception inside the skin but this time all the corner are sharp and so are the laces, becoming the path for the elevator and the stairway.

7th passage: applying the rules and modelling several times the towers I've reached these results. In the natural tower it's evident the Chamfer rule that has generated a smooth surface that was transformed in a water blanket lately. All around the building the two helix end in a Undefined way, like the top of the tower which is not really materialized but a kind of dematerialization of the structure.

The outlook of the outlook of the artificial tower is quite plain but inside there's the Column of Light which donate to the guests a Mystic perspective from the bottom of the building. They're like a FIRE where the core is hotter than hell but the edges are cosy and warm.

8th act: modifying the projects once again I've applied more transormation to the towers. I've planned the balconies of the natural building covered with a straw hat, a rail that would filter the light and the looks from outside. About the artificial tower here there're a section of the atrium with the volume of the elevator and a render of the same atrium coming from the corridor to the library (which is supposed to be MASSIVE and MYSTIC) to a TWINKILNG and ENLIGHTED space.
