FORMICA GIULIA
Hey there! I'm Giulia Formica, 22 years old.
I'm attending a masters degree in communication design (first year!)
Can't wait to see results!
FIRST GENERATIVE EXERCISE
I had to chose 3 adjectives connected to my personal memories, feelings and imagination.
I'm a drummer since i was 10, so i've focused my exercitation on the rhythm of the line.
ADJECTIVES:
1- Shipwrecked (Naufragato)
2- Tormented (Tormentato)
3- Resolute (Risoluto)
REFERENCES:
1- There's a famous italian poetry entitled ''L'Infinitoâ€, G. Leopardi, that contains a paragraph about the shipwreck that means contemplation, losing the sense of reality, alienation from reality and set sail for another dimension using the mind and imagination.
“ ... Così tra questa
immensità s'annega il pensier mio:
e il naufragar m'è dolce in questo mare.â€
2- I really like illustration, in particular i follow Charles Burns and i love his “thick-to-thin line†that generates a visceral effect.
For the abject “tormentedâ€, i've chosen an illustration made by him taken from his comic-book “Black Hole†that express perfectly my kind of interior torment as a state of no excape and incessant hunting of something that i can't focus yet because something constantly hinders me, like briars of this illustration.
3- Resolute is a kind of determination. A resolute person is someone that mantains his decision and fights for that strongly. But resolute is also a musical figure that expect an energetic and definited esecution. So i've found a perfect performance from a music project that includes some of the most famous italian drummers: “La Drummeriaâ€.
Watch this video because it's really suggestive!

RULES:
1- Losing the sense of reality means lose cardinal points that bind the mind to reality. So, no cardinal points, no mind rules. No mind rules means sail with the casuality.
The line has to be casual, fruit of an hand's shipwrecked. The rule is to draw a random and instintive figure or doodle without removing the pen or the brush from the paper. Thought lines are not permitted. Get lost in the paper.
Here i reported an example
2- The torment is something that doesn't leave you quiet and can't find a way out so it repeatedly come and go and you can't stop looking for a solution. The rule is to confine an element inside a form or a figure and it will naturally move to get rid. Every element's movement is marked with a “thick-to-thin†line that will generate a sort of visual cage. It is necessary that there won't be a way out for the element.
An example
3- Pentagram's lines are always parallell and they never cross each others. So they're resoluted to follow their decodificated way. The rule is to use them as a sort of brush. I can draw with them or i can try to write something; I have to use the pentagram as a writing/drawing tool. I can also place notes on the pentagramm, but they have to be always the same. It is necessary that the lines never cross each other and maintain their estabilished direction and have a starting and an anding point.
