East of Eden
Back to Giacomo Crivellari
Zero: ''"And the Lord God planted a garden in Eden, in the east; and there he put the man whom he had formed. And out of the ground the LORD God made to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food, the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil"
This is the beginning of the project, a bunch of information given directly from Above. Not only the house of our ancestors, but also the Garden of delights, where you could taste a sunshine and touch a cloud..
First: a part from the three adjectives, which remain the basement of all the future projects, I've choosen a poetry by Dante Alighieri that would lead this experiment in a different way, in other way following the message given by the author in this piece of art. It's named Tanto gentile e tanto onesta pare..., is a sonet and deals with the shinig beauty of a woman, and it's pureness:
Tanto gentile e tanto onesta pare
la donna mia, quand'ella altrui saluta,
ch'ogni lingua deven tremando muta,
e li occhi no l'ardiscono di guardare...
Like an angel, a creature from heaven, the woman stands beside the man and surprise him everyday with her endless light. Also Eve was created by the Boss to complete the human nature and help him to lead the world. For this reason the project, the East of Eden wouldn't be a symmetrical land, torn by the differences, but a unique formed garden in which there's no distinctions, no differeces.
Second: This time I would use a Crucifix like a catalyst, not the common one but the Cross that stand on the top of the mountains: it's a symbol for the efforts, for the sufferences, for the joy and the satisfaction. It usually stand-still, pointed on the ground and surronded by the nature of the mountain, with rocks, snow, grass around it; it faces the valley and the breathtaking view from above.
It is mystic, because it is. It's powerful like a rock where all the climbers could have a sure rest. It's natural like a tree coming out from the ground, or a stone, or a piece of steel.
Third: the initial paradigm of the project, one of the garden and a specific one for the house, is the result of a thought, an algorithm which includes several factors: the footprint of the catalyst, the requests of the clients, my idea of the East of Eden. Eventually it look like this:
The idea of a valley fullfilled with trees, flower and every kind of animals is organized in a circle where the tree of life is the center and the other element play with the space, where everything looks casual; the tree of kowledge itself is hidden in the wood, mixed with all the others, there a river which divided the land in two parts but there's no actually a real division between them but just a proof of the existance of the Lord: a shiny stream of life in the middle of the East od Eden.
Fourth: from the initial paradigm I've developed an idea of the House that it's different from everyone else. I imagine it like a moving entity, an adaptive shape that would change with the weather, with the mood of the people around, with the sun turning in the sky. There'll be sunny days and rainy ones, there are days where you want to face the world, and moment where no eyes should arrive: for these reasons the house should move.
Extempore: collecting lots of symbolic elements of this projet I've realized this picture. It contains a perspective of the valley, with the trees that are pure mechanical application of a rule, Cusp, repeated so many times that the modification became the entity itself, forgetting about common formalizations. The house of Adam is narrated by a sequence od trasformations, the movement of the external skin; the sun above the clouds is a reference to a sculpture by Pomodoro in Milan, and it represent the triunph of technology over beauty and its fusion. Inside the window there's a Friedrich's painting, a romantic view of a landscape that is so far from human comprehension but so close in the nature of the essences. Eventually the tree of knowledge is like a table with the fruits on it, accessible to everyone without any effort.
Fifth: the garden is full of trees, flowers, rocks, animals. The story told us which tree was the fatal one, and which was fortunately avoided by the unstoppable greed of human curiosity. The two theological trees were designed in this way:
Sixth: To study the connection between the house and the garden, the interaction between the elements of the two spaces, I've developed the project in the 4th dimension, in a Hypercube focusing the atttention on the passages from the house to the garden and backward.
The Outlook in compacted, firm , still standing like a crucifix on a mountain. Inside the light it's broken in a thousand drops and the entrance would be like a tiny passage from the ground into a cave.
Seventh: increasing the complexity of the Adam's house project I've designed a first plan and section putting attention to some relevant aspect.
The structure would be composed by flexible elements which are fixed by a loop on the bottom and one on the upper part to block them. The gravity would model the building following smooth lines and all the surfaces are chamfered. The use of several radial elements translate the division of the light in an obscuring system, also modelled thinking about the summer radiation which is different from the winter sun.
Eight: following the same process I've designed also the garden of Eden, the shape of the landscape comes out reading the Bible, the word in it draws in my mind the form of the valley; everything is dominated by the Lord and by the Man, there's no edges and no pulsion to exit that place.
===Ninth==: The Adam's house in reaching a more complex form, defining elements and the dimensioning the project I've reached this results:
A water blanket was applied on the top of the structure to absure a dry climate, all around the round platform were disposed mobile platforms of a square meter which, during the night or in rainy days, can be lifted forming a wall all around the house, increasing the sensation of privacy.
Tenth: here there's a perspective from the house looking out to the tree of knowledge. What should be clear with this view is the hidden position of the tiny tree and the dominating figure of the tree of life. This last one is the most important, central element in the garden, the top is directly connected with the Boss and from there, He manage everything. The tree of knowledge is mixed in the wood, one elements in a thousand, in the middle of the forest. Its fruits are easily accessible and is outlook is so voluptuous, gripping.
